Artificial Intelligence (AI) Pilots Across MUSD
Across our country, we have seen an increase in the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) to increase efficiency, automate tasks, and generate answers for almost anything. AI is the ability of computers or machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. This includes understanding language, recognizing patterns, solving problems, or making decisions.
As part of MUSD’s ongoing commitment to provide a comprehensive educational experience, we will pilot and integrate AI technology in our high school classrooms and on MUSD-issued Chromebooks for high school students in Spring 2025. Additionally, students in grades 5-12 will have access to Khanmingo, an AI-based personal tutor and teaching assistant from Khan Academy.
AI has the potential to equip students with future-ready skills and prepare them for technological advancements in tomorrow's workforce. It fosters creativity and boosts student engagement, and enhances learning through personalized experiences.
Our initial efforts will incorporate basic knowledge and skills so students are prepared to use the technology in post-secondary environments that are already using this technology. High school students may participate in classroom activities involving AI tools, including Magic School AI, ChatGPT, Adobe Firefly, and Khanmigo. Most of these tools are designed for students aged 13+. Learn more about these tools.
Using AI responsibly and honestly is another aspect we will focus on in the classroom. Students will be guided on how to use AI as a learning tool to enhance their education by asking clear questions, fact-checking, encouraging originality, and practicing safe and respectful use.
Acceptable Use Policy AI Addition
Each year, parents and guardians review an acceptable use agreement that outlines the expectations of our students regarding the use of technology. As we start to navigate the use of AI and emerging technologies in high school classrooms, our policy has been updated to include the following:
Under appropriate circumstances, Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools can be effectively used as a supplement to and not a replacement for traditional learning methods. Consequently, with prior teacher permission/consent, students may use such resources to help them better understand and analyze information and/or access course materials. If students have any questions about whether they are permitted to use AI tools for a specific class assignment, they should ask their teacher.
Privacy and Data Security
The privacy and security of our students are paramount. All AI tools used in the classroom will comply with applicable privacy laws such as the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The use of AI in the classroom will adhere to guidelines to ensure the privacy and security of student information. AI tools will be used under the supervision of educators and for educational purposes only.
